The Candlesticks stand on a stepped shaped base decorated with reeding which rises to a circular sunken well. The defined baluster stems are decorated with reeding and the shaft and spool shaped sockets display horizontal girdles around them. The base is engraved with a contemporary Crest, this being that of the Gost family of London. The candlesticks are in exceptional condition, with crisp marks and are of a very good weight.
William Gould was a specialist Candlestick maker of fine quality. He was apprentice to his brother James and his masterpiece is recognised as the Knesworth Candelier in the Fishmonger’s Company, which was made in 1752.
