Pair of George II Waiters or Bottle Stands by James Warren, circa 1755

The Waiters are of an unusual size and stand on three hoof feet. The raised scroll border is decorated with foliate motifs and the centre of each piece is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with dolphin Crest above. This is all surrounded by a Rococo shell and foliate spray cartouche. The reverse is also engraved with a set of contemporary marriage initials. The Arms are those of the French family who were raised to the Peerage during the 19th century as the Barons De Freyne. The family had several branches including of Tyrone House, Moniva Castle, both County Galway, and Cloonyquin, County Roscommon. The Waiters are in excellent condition, with a good colour and very fine weight. James Warren is a particularly scarce maker and his distinctive mark is shown in Douglas Bennett’s “Irish Georgian Silver”, Mark 275, page 347. The crisp marks are shown in the image stream. Due to their small size, these may well have been used as decanter or bottle stands.
