This is a slant front secretary or bureau made in England circa 1780. It is made of Kashmir walnut (the finest cut of burr walnut) and walnut. The top, the slant fall and the drawer fronts are all banded in walnut with a string inlay of ebony, with Kashmir walnut to the middle with a shaped string inlay of ebony. The slant drops down to reveal and interior with six cubby holes on both the right and left sides above a long drawer over two smaller drawers. There is a central cupboard door that opens to reveal a small drawer. Even the back side of the cupboard door is in a Kashmir walnut. There is a tooled green leather writing surface. Both the right and left sides of the secretary have a walnut banding with a string inlay of ebony and walnut to the middle. There is a cross cut molding to the base. The whole rests on a beautifully shaped set of ogee bracket feet. The finish and physical condition are fabulous. There are wonderful quality solid brass open pierced Chippendale handles on the four long drawer fronts. This is as good as it gets. It measures 40 in. wide x 23 1/2 in. deep x 42 in. tall.
