English or Welsh Georgian oak paneled press cupboard with three drawers and five cupboard doors. Behind the cupboard doors are two shelves for storage. The press cupboard was to quote Victor Chinnery “the most important and prestigious piece of furniture which many small households could boast” so it was well taken care of and valued from one generation to the next. This cupboard is no exception, it has been well polished and well treated throughout its life of over 200 years; the oak glows and the shaped panels indicate that the original owners were willing to spend a little more to have a special piece in their home. In Welsh these cupboards are called cwpwrdd deuddarn, literally a two part cupboard and were used for storage of a wide variety of items in a country house, circa 1800.
