According to his 1971 obituary from the New York Times, “W. Allston Flagg, an investment banker and former governor of the New York Stock Exchange, was a collateral descendant, and namesake of Washington Allston, the early 19th-century American painter. His studies at Harvard were interrupted by Navy service in World War I as a submarine chaser commander. He returned to active duty as a lieutenant commander in World War II.
Mr. Flagg succeeded his father, Washington A. Flagg, as a partner in the brokerage firm of Post & Flagg and continued as a partner in Harris, Upham & Co. after their merger. He was a past president of the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, L. I., and a former governor of the Racquet & Tennis Club in New York.
