In the early 19th century, stirrup cups were originally used as a vessel to hold a drink offered to a man on horseback before a hunting departure.
Today in England and Europe stirrup cups are still used to serve drinks on horseback to the participants in a fox hunt or steeple chase,
the beverage is given to guests just before the very moment of departure, referring to having one’s feet in the stirrups. It is also the drink served at the meet before a fox hunt.
Nowadays, stirrup cups are still commonly connected with hunting but are also used for decorative gifts on any occasion.
The Stag Deer Silver Stirrup Cup is a type of drinking vessel or cup that is often associated with equestrian or hunting themes. It is designed in the shape of a stirrup, which is the foot support used by riders to balance themselves on horseback. These cups are typically made of silver or other high-quality materials and are often used for toasting or drinking during hunting events or other equestrian gatherings.
The tradition of the Stirrup Cup dates back several centuries, and it was a common practice for riders to have a drink before heading out on a hunt. The cup would be filled with a drink, such as wine or a small measure of spirits, and offered to riders as they mounted their horses. It was a way to wish them luck and success in the hunt.
Today, the Silver Stirrup Cup remains a popular item among collectors and those interested in equestrian or hunting-related artifacts. They can also be found as decorative pieces or used during special equestrian events and competitions.
